Update Chromebox Troubleshooting Guide – Device Slot Type Assignment Error

Created by Justin Sutterfield, Modified on Wed, 18 Mar at 10:19 AM by Justin Sutterfield

Background

During a Chromebox replacement at Harris Teeter Store #131, the FOT (Field Operations Technician) encountered an "Error Assigning Device by Code" message when attempting to enter the setup code. After escalation, the root cause was identified: the device slot type had not been assigned to the device slot, which blocks setup code entry. This restriction was added after the initial Charleston installs and is not currently documented in the troubleshooting guide.

Required Content for Guide Update

Error: "Error Assigning Device by Code"

Cause: The device slot type has not been assigned to the device slot. This is required before a setup code can be accepted. This restriction applies to all Chromebox installs following the initial Charleston deployment.

How to identify:

  • Setup code is entered correctly but returns the error above
  • Rebooting and re-entering the code does not resolve the issue
  • Other pilot screens at the same store may also show as "unassigned" for device slot type

Resolution Steps:

  1. Navigate to the device management portal and locate the device by its Android ID
  2. Confirm the device slot type field is blank/unassigned
  3. Assign the correct program/slot type to the device slot
  4. Have the FOT re-enter the setup code — it should process successfully

Note: Each Chromebox has its own unique setup code. Do not reuse the setup code from the unit being replaced.
